Pizza, originally "cake, tart, pie," is of uncertain origin. Over time, craving for this pie became so great that either the king, to gratify his wife's yearning, or the queen, to gratify the king's hunger, had pizza ovens built at the palace, so they could make the dish at home, an act that brought the pie even more attention.
Pizza is sometimes used as a general word for a savory pie; the Campanian pizza rustica and the Italian American pizzagiena (Easter pie) are examples of this more general sense. The term pizza pie is dialectal, and pie is used for simplicity.
A pizza is a round, open pie made with yeast pizza dough which has pizza toppings of tomato sauce, cheese, and a variety of other pizza ingredients. It is garnished with melted butter, garlic, cheese, and sometimes bacon. Often, "Americanized" foods such as barbecued chicken and bacon cheeseburgers are used as pizza ingredients.
Pizza is eaten throughout Italy, with regional variations in toppings. Pizza is popular in Australia, where a significant percentage of the population is of Italian descent. Red pizza ingredients are tomato sauce and cheese, while white pizza uses no sauce but is stuffed with a blend of cheeses and topped with olive oil and rosemary leaves.
Pizza is an American favorite and is very often ordered from a local pizza franchise with delivery locally. Pizza is also ordered online with local pizza delivery. But many people choose homemade pizza because they enjoy the homemade pizza sauce. Pizza is normally eaten hot (typically at lunch or dinner), but is sometimes eaten as cold leftovers as breakfast pizza.
